Why does my roof age matter if solar panels are rated for 25 years?
Panels last 25 years. Roofs do not. If your roof has 5–7 years of life left, you are choosing between expensive roof replacement now (before the solar install) or removing and reinstalling panels in 5 years when your roof fails. Solar installers are roofing contractors for one day; they do not carry roofing liability if your roof fails two years later. Ask your installer for a written roof assessment and a signed statement that your roof can support panels for the duration of the install's design life.
What is the difference between STC and real-world performance ratings?
Standard Test Conditions (STC) are laboratory conditions—25°C, 1000 W/m² irradiance, optimal angle. Real roofs run 15–20°C hotter, face varied angles, and have dirt. A panel rated 400W at STC produces 280–320W in typical conditions. Qualified installers use real performance data (PVWATTS or measured arrays in your region) rather than just multiplying STC ratings. They also account for inverter losses, wiring losses, and soiling. The gap between marketing numbers and actual output is 20–25 percent.
How do utility rates affect whether solar pencils out financially?
Your payback period depends entirely on electricity rates and rate escalation. If rates are 15¢/kWh, your savings are strong. At 10¢/kWh, payback stretches and incentive structure becomes critical. Worse, utility commissions change rates unpredictably. A 3 percent annual rate increase compounds dramatically over 25 years. Qualified installers run multiple financial scenarios and show you breakeven under different rate assumptions. They do not assume rates stay flat and they do not hide the dependence on state incentives.
What does a system design actually include?
Design means three documents. First: electrical one-line showing inverter type, module count, string configuration, and protection scheme. Second: roof plan with exact module placement, flashing details, grounding, and load calculations. Third: financial model showing system output, electricity offset, and year-by-year cash flow. Any installer who gives you a price without all three is not quoting a real design—they are quoting a template.

The result is an industry where a license means you passed a multiple-choice exam, not that you design systems to engineering standards.
